‘The Last Of Us’ 3D Model Buiding – Behind The Scene

the last of us

To continue Nesso’s behind-the-scene series, in today’s episode, we will walk you through another 3D model project our team has just finished. It is the 3D model of the characters in The Last Of Us – an action-adventure game where players escort a teenage girl from the post-apocalyptic United States.

Like our last 3D model projects, we built the 3D model of this badass monster in 4 steps: ideation, art conceptualization, 3D modeling, and finally 3D printing.

Let’s discover the details of each step!

A quick glance at ‘The Last Of Us’

The action-adventure game The Last of Us came out in 2013 and was created by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Players take control of Joel, a smuggler who has to escort a teenage girl named Ellie across the United States after a catastrophic event.

The Last of Us game is played from a third person’s point of view. Players fight off aggressive humans and bloodthirsty creatures infected by a mutated fungus in the genus Cordyceps with guns, homemade weapons, and stealth.

In multiplayer mode, up to eight people can play the game together or against each other.

The Last of Us became one of the most popular video games, selling over 1.3 million copies within the first week and 17 million by April 2018. The game’s success led to the creation of a media franchise, such as a comic book in 2013, a live show in 2014, a sequel in 2020, and especially, a TV adaptation by HBO in 2023.

How Nesso built a 3D print the last of us

Like previous 3D model projects, our process for creating ‘The Last Of Us’ 3D model consisted of four main phases: ideation, concept art, 3D modeling, and printing the model to bring it to real life.

#1. Idea

Since the game is about Joel and Ellie traveling across the post-apocalyptic United States while protecting each other. For this 3D project, we want to depict the image of Ellie holding a knife, rushing forward to fight against the enemy that is aggressively dragging down her ally.

#2. Concept art

The following concept art of ‘The last of us’ model is the result of our team’s five working days, including two days spent gathering reference materials and three days spent designing the character.

#3. 3D modeling

As soon as we had a concept drawing of the characters in the model, we immediately got down to business and started the process of 3D modeling it.

We begin modeling Ellie’s attacking position, the intense wrestling between Joel and the enemy, and the surrounding background, then work our way down to the tiniest details, such as the wrinkles on the character’s clothes, the way Joel is trying to reach the knife lying nearby, the lightning, etc.

#4. 3D printing

Once we’ve finished fine-tuning our model, we then preprocessed the ‘The Last Of Us’ 3D model STL file with Chituabox & Materialise Magics. And finally, we printed the model out using resin material and paint color on it.

Wrapping up!

That wraps it up! You have just been taken on a tour of Nesso’s complete process for how we construct a three-dimensional model of the ‘The Last Of Us’ model.

What are your thoughts on the job that we have done? Is there anything that you might be willing to share with us so that we can improve the projects that we have coming up? Please don’t be afraid to share your thoughts in the comments section below!
